Developer Spotlight Feature
Mango Studios
Conducted by Dominic Smith
In our latest Developer Spotlight, we are thrilled to feature Simon, the innovative mind behind Mango Studios, known for their exceptional X-Plane sound packs. Simon shares his journey from an early interest in sound design to becoming the leader of a premier sound pack developer, and discusses the creative passion that drives Mango Studios' ongoing growth.
Simon, could I start by asking how Mango Studios began, what its initial vision was, and how you came up with the name?
Mango Studios started as a one-man project driven by my personal dissatisfaction with the sound quality of some high-priced aircraft models in X-Plane. Frustrated by the subpar .wav files, I decided to take matters into my own hands and began creating improved sound files. My first freeware add-on was for the SSG 748. The turning point came when a friend, disappointed by the sounds in a pricey add-on aircraft he purchased, asked me to create some enhanced sounds for him. This project evolved significantly from just replacing a few files; I ended up developing a comprehensive FMOD sound pack, which was released as Mango Studios’ first product, the Flight Factor A350 Sound Pack. Throughout this process, I was fortunate to have the support of a friend, Wolfair, who was incredibly patient and instrumental in helping me master FMOD. As for the name "Mango Studios," it was inspired by fond childhood memories of my grandmother’s mango tree in Venezuela. Naming the company after her and those cherished moments felt like the perfect tribute.
Can you walk us through the process of capturing and creating the sounds for an aircraft pack?
Absolutely! The process begins with our team reaching out to a network of pilots, flight engineers, and maintenance hangars to gather authentic sound samples. After selecting the ideal sounds for our sound pack, we import these recordings into our studio. Here, we meticulously modify and tailor each sound to meet the specific requirements of the aircraft pack we are developing.
What are the most challenging sounds to capture and recreate in X-Plane?
The most challenging sounds to capture are often the miscellaneous ones, such as windshield wipers, warning signals, and seat motor sounds, especially in Airbus models. These sounds are particularly tricky to isolate because they're frequently masked by louder, more dominant noises like the aircraft’s air conditioning packs, passenger chatter, avionics, and the myriad of other sounds simultaneously occurring in an airliner.
Are there any particular technologies or software that are crucial to your sound pack development?
A key piece of technology in our sound pack development is my portable audio recording device. I take it with me everywhere, especially when flying, to ensure I capture every possible sound. This thorough recording process allows us to potentially utilize these sounds in our products later on.
How do you test the sounds within X-Plane to ensure they are as realistic as possible?
We have a dedicated team of testers who meticulously check for any bugs or minor issues. Once we confirm that there are no problems, we begin the detailed process of tweaking the sounds. This involves comparing our sounds to the videos we’ve recorded or received, ensuring that the final product is as realistic as possible.
What has been the most challenging project for Mango Studios, and what made it so?
The MD-11 Sound Pack was undoubtedly our most challenging project. Finding the necessary audio samples was particularly difficult; there were virtually no suitable recordings available online, and even direct contacts with pilots and mechanics yielded very little usable material. This scarcity of resources significantly prolonged the development process. Additionally, this project was our first attempt at creating sound packs for dual engine variants through our plugin, as well as our first engine modification. These complexities combined to make the project immensely challenging, stretching over several months before we could finally release the product.
How do you incorporate community feedback into your development process?
We place great importance on ensuring that every customer is heard. Whenever we receive feedback, we take it seriously, documenting each comment in our testing feedback section. If the feedback points to a bug, we record it in our bug list. This documentation helps us continuously improve our products based on user insights.
Have you worked with aircraft developers to synchronize your sound packs with their models? What does this collaboration look like?
Our collaboration with aircraft developers has mostly been indirect. For instance, we worked with Rotate to obtain a list of data references related to the MD-11’s EGPWS/TCAS warnings. This collaboration enabled us to ensure that all necessary warnings were accurately included in our sound pack. Additionally, we've directly collaborated with AKD, where we completely remade and enhanced some sounds at his request. He was extremely satisfied with the upgraded sounds within his budget. We are also engaging with a few other small developers on projects, though details of these are not yet public.
Which of your sound packs has received the most significant community response, and why do you think it resonated so well?
I believe our A350 Sound Pack has garnered the most significant community response. Despite being almost 3-4 years old, it continues to receive a high volume of orders. We think it resonates so well because of its enduring quality and relevance to our users' needs. Encouraged by this lasting popularity, we are planning to further enhance this sound pack soon.
Are there any new or upcoming projects you’re particularly excited about? What can the X-Plane community look forward to?
I am both thrilled and excited to begin work on a sound pack for the IXEG 737. It's a project I've been eager to start for a long time, as I've always wanted to create sounds for a 737. Additionally, we are on the brink of releasing a Version 2 update for our sound pack for the SSG 747-8. These projects are sure to bring some exciting developments to the X-Plane community.
How do you see the role of sound design evolving in X-Plane over the next few years?
I believe that the standards for sound in X-Plane are set to rise significantly. At Mango Studios, we're prepared to adapt to these increasing demands in any necessary way. Our aim is to continually evolve and refine our sound packs to meet and surpass these new standards.
If you could create a sound pack without any constraints, what would it be and why?
If I had no constraints, my dream project would be to fully recreate the MD-80 Sound Pack, capturing every unique sound and noise the aircraft makes. The MD-80 is one of my all-time favourite aircraft, but due to its age, it's been challenging to collect every desired sound. With unlimited resources, I'd love the opportunity to develop a truly comprehensive and authentic sound pack for this classic plane.
Are there any individuals in your life that have significantly influenced your approach to your work at Mango Studios?
Two pivotal figures have greatly shaped Mango Studios. The first is my good friend Wolfair, who not only taught me how to use FMOD but also provided invaluable advice throughout my journey. The second is Nicky, our Media/Support Director. Nicky has profoundly transformed the trajectory and quality of our products. His proactive involvement in our development process and his willingness to voice his opinions are qualities that I deeply value and rely on. Together, they have been instrumental in shaping the direction and success of Mango Studios.
How do you balance your passion for sound design and flight simulation with other aspects of your life?
Balancing my passion for sound design with other life commitments can be challenging. Currently, as I pursue a career in commercial aviation and navigate the demands of flight school and various exams, Mango Studios isn't always my top priority. However, I'm fortunate to have a supportive team, especially Nicky, our Media/Support Director. He reliably steps in to manage responsibilities whenever I'm stretched thin, ensuring that our projects maintain momentum.
Besides aviation, do any other hobbies inspire your approach to sound design at Mango Studios?
Yes, my interest in cars, particularly rebuilding my 2006 Subaru STi, has been influential. This hobby has taught me the value of patience in building something you love. At Mango Studios, this patience has transformed how I approach detailed tasks. Initially, I found creating sounds for every cockpit button overwhelming, but now I find it relaxing and fulfilling.
Lastly, Simon, if you could choose one feature to be added to X-Plane in the future, what would it be and why?
I’d like to see more realistic ground handling, as the present ground handling has always seemed off to me. Enhancing this feature would not only improve realism but also allow me to develop specific sounds for it, which I’d really enjoy.
___________________________
Simon, thank you for sharing the story behind Mango Studios. We wish you every success in your future projects.

Airport of the Week
Can you guess the name of the airport below?
If so, why not attach a screenshot in the comments section...but DO NOT mention the name (gives others a chance) ?
Clue: This small, rural airport is nestled in a land reminiscent of where Dorothy, Toto, and their three companions might adventure. The airport's name subtly echoes that of a popular Indian dish. If you're up for a spicy challenge, can you guess which airport this is?
Well done to Gason71, Lysan, basmartin, WalSch, TacanTom, Benkornflies, Dennis Powell, MarcXP, and J.K., who correctly guessed last week’s airport, which was Augusta Airport (YAUG).

Airport of the Week
Can you guess the name of the airport below?
If so, why not attach a screenshot in the comments section...but DO NOT mention the name (gives others a chance) ?
Clue: This week’s airport sits where two oceans meet, serving a town whose name echoes a peak summer month. Positioned at the southernmost point of its region, this gateway opens to scenic coastlines, historic lighthouses, and waters frequented by migrating whales.
Well done to WalSch, Gason71, Dennis Powell, J.K., dekel233, new2, royaloak, TacanTom, and MarcXP, who correctly guessed last week’s airport, which was Lake Placid Airport (KLKP).
Did You Know
"Glacier Girl," a Lockheed P-38F Lightning from World War II, was part of the Lost Squadron forced to land on a Greenland ice field in 1942 due to severe weather. After the crew was rescued, the plane was left behind and eventually buried under 268 feet of ice. Miraculously, 50 years later, in 1992, it was excavated by the Greenland Expedition Society. Restored to flying condition in Middlesboro, Kentucky, Glacier Girl took to the skies again in October 2002.

Edit April 13 2024: unfortunately there are some errors in the scenery "Ligurian COAST Totally insane" for both XP12 and XP11, my guilty: stupidly I'didn't cecked the Log.txt files before the publishing trusting on the fact that my XP12 and 11 worked fine on my system.
So now I provide you a Patch to solve the various reported problems.
(First, only if you use x plane 11, you have to install the patch for compatibility with x plane 11 present in the package zip fille. Overwrting the various BCSceneries folders in X-Plane 11/Custom Scenery with the ones in the patch)
Installation:
You have the extract the four folders in this .zip into ../X-Plane 12/Custom Scenery
Subsequently you have to remove the following file ..Custom Scenery/BCSceneries - Ligurian COAST D d orthophoto and Savona city/Earth nav data/+40+000/+43+007.dsf
and you have to remove the following folder:
..\X-Plane 12\Custom Scenery\BCSceneries - Ligurian COAST B LIMJ and harbour landmarks\plugins\Living Scenery Technology
..\X-Plane 12\Custom Scenery\BCSceneries - Ligurian COAST C residential areas\plugins\Living Scenery TechnologyThat's all for now,
If there will be reported further erros with the scenery, we'll make the needed patches
Again, I'm very sorry for this mistake,
Bruno
Hi to you all!! We have finally finished the development of "Ligurian COAST Totally insane" (two years of work!).
It's been published on X-Plane.org store at the following link:
https://store.x-plane.org/LIMJ--Ligurian-COAST-Totally-insane_p_1231.html
More screenshots at the following link:
Following a short description:Ligurian COAST Totally insane
Scenery for X-Plane 12.0.8+
-This scenery covers the entire Liguria region in Northern Italy (7000 square Kilometers). It include three airports (LIMJ Genova Sestri, LIMG Albenga Airport and LIQW Sarzana Luni Military Airport) and three cities (Genova, Savona and La Spezia).
All the three cities overlook the sea and have mountains behind them.
The region include coasts, mountains, plains and cities (each with an harbour).
La spezia city include an Italian NAVY with UHD military ships (work by Dario Ruga).
The entire region with the cities include 1-0.5 m/pixel (ZL 17/18) Orthophotos. The city of Genova has 600.000 inhabitants and a metropolitan area of 1.500.000 inhabitants. It covers an area of 243 square kilometers.
The cities of Savona and La Spezia uses generic buildings for industrial areas and relies on default or third party autogen for residential areas.
The city of Genova features 100 UHD landmarks (included the LIMJ airport) distributed in the airport, the harbour, industrial areas, Ancient Port, Fair and residential areas (3D modeled - 16000 buildings).
The residential buildings uses generic facades and real roofs (the roofs uses PBR material).
Some of the UHD landmarks in Genova city are: La Lanterna (lighthouse), animated Ferris wheel, San Giorgio Bridge (former Morandi Bridge), the fair, the static Canadair airplanes at LIMJ (all works by Marcogrifo), Genova's Aquarium, the skycrapers at Administrative center and many others. Further the three cities features hundreds of ships, boats, cranes, containers, parked trains and parked trucks and cars.
The city of Genova features a photographic night environment. It is very realistic and vibrant. The night version is ready for the future "foggy lights" function that will be present in next patches from Laminar Research (it is now activable with the use of "Dataref Editor" plug-in from Laminar Research (free)).
The cities of Savona and La Spezia relies (for night lighting) on default or third party scenery.- In the Ancient Port (near the Galata Sea Museum), there is a submarine (Nazario Sauro S 518) ultra high detailed.
- Helipads in the airport and in the fair (Eastern of the city).
- LIMJ airport features the runway (10/28) on a peninsula on the sea. It serves airline and GA traffic. The entire airport is builded in high definition. It feautures 20 architectural complexes in HD.
The LIMJ Terminal is an UHD model and it has partial prerendered generic interiors.
Further there are custom ground services moving near the Terminal. Also at the Terminal there are moving (walking) people.
I've rebuilded the Terminal that now is updated to the next 2025 year (in real life there are currently works on expansion of the Terminal).- The control tower at LIMJ has generic prerendered interiors.
- LIMJ Terminal require "Autogate" plug-in by Marginal (the last version) to have animated jetways.
- The airports of Albenga (LIMG) and Sarzana (LIQW) are made in a quite good quality with all the buildings present in real life.
Both has single runways. They serves GA traffic.- In partial outback there is hand placed vegetation (trees for forest and fruit trees for agricultural fields).
- Sea from photoreal textures.
- Realistic and accurate ILS offset of 2 degrees at LIMJ airport.
- Extensive documentation for the airports (by ENAV) and the city (wikipedia).
- Included Patch to the compatibility of the scenery with X-Plane 11
EDIT: has been reported to me that the xp11 version don't work at all. I'm so sorry. I'm making a patch to solve this problem. If also to you happen the same thing, please send me your Log.txt.
REQUIREMENTSX-Plane 12.0.8+

Here some screenshots:
The scenery costs $32 for new customers, it's free for 5.0 release customers.
I’ve also to thanks the GeoPortal Liguria ( https://geoportal.regione.liguria.it/) for the orthophotos of Portofino Park.Performances:
The scenery is been tested with the following system:
Cpu Intel Core i5 9400F (4.1 ghz Turbo)
Mainboard MSI B365M PRO-VH

OK, folks, I've gone ahead and launched v1.7.2 with the last two bug fixes / usability improvements that I think will make the plugin a little more robust. Both of the bugs I fixed were longstanding issues I'd grown to kind of just "live with" over the last few years, and suddenly it dawned on me I could easily fix both of them, so I did. 🙂 The release notes are below. Please pick up the new release now from the same link as posted above, unless this wraps in which case I'll edit it to add the link again. 🙂 As usual, please let me know if anyone sees any problems with v1.7.2 -- I can't easily test on all variants of all platforms, so I rely on folks to inform me if something's out of whack. 🙂 But I only changed the two things below, so it should be pretty solid at this point. Thanks. Steve --- Cut here for release notes for v1.7.2: A-Better-Camera v1.7.2 is a bug-fix release from the recent launch of v1.7 and v1.7.1. (See the release notes for those releases just after v1.7.2, below.) Changes in v1.7.2 (from v1.7.1) - released 24-April-2024: Fix longstanding camera-reset bug: Don't reset camera views just because ABC detects that a target (such as an AI aircraft) has "re-spawned" or switched slots due to a user loading different AI aircraft, etc. In all those cases, we already have a mechanism to handle the difference so that the camera is re-positioned relative to the new target position; however, we were resetting the view back to the default because that code was never updated to use the newer repositioning method. So, this now works like it should! 🙂 Note for experienced users who want more context on this: This was a more general bug (i.e., it applied in several cases), and it turns out it was actually two related issues that were both solved to make this work better in the case described above (i.e., re-spawning and/or AI aircraft switching slots or being displaced by new user configurations). The reason the reset happened at all is described next; but the reason it was seemingly random had to do with scenery tiles and the boundaries between them... I.e., when the User aircraft crossed an invisible boundary between scenery tiles, the X-Plane "local" coordinate system would (as it does in X-Plane) re-center itself with new reference points. This wasn't the main issue, but just a trigger that may make it clearer to the reader why it seemed to be random. When the current target either (a) jumps a great distance without warning (which happens mostly with AI aircraft "re-spawning" at new locations in X-Plane), or (b) been replaced in-situ by a new model (which happens in LiveTraffic, for example, after flight master data loads and LiveTraffic replaces a temporary model with a specific model for a given target, possibly while the user is tracking it in ABC's camera views). In the original version of ABC -- before I had built abstractions that allow me now to manage complex mappings between differently-shaped targets, allowing for restoring a preserved camera view "relative to" a different model (i.e., different target size) -- I originally had no option but to have ABC throw its hands up and load a fresh new view for the new model, to make sure the camera at a sensible relative distance from the target, for example. But as it turns out -- with the QuickView feature I built a couple of years ago -- I simply needed to go have ABC load an internal QuickView of the current camera position, adapted to the new target's size (which may have changed), and -- voilà -- all is fixed now for this (and several other related/similar scenarios)! 🙂 Fix inconsistency in auto-zoom when toggling any ABC spot view on (or toggling auto-zoom on while in any ABC spot view), with the camera already zoomed-in. In fact, this is really a bug/consistency fix with a previous change back in v1.6 to have auto-zoom zoom back out to full wide (1x) when you turn auto-zoom off in spot views. This was not the same logic in reverse -- i.e., when turning auto-zoom ON again, it should have just gone back to the default auto-zoom level (just like zooming out did for the auto-zoom off toggle). So, this makes things far more consistent, and thus eliminates the weird increasingly-zoomed-in effect that was happening with each toggle off/back-on again cycle of auto-zoom within the same spot view. Note: this change only applies if the user has "auto-reset zoom-out override" enabled (which is the default). Otherwise, for users who have opted-out of "auto-reset zoom-out override", there is no change. -
Well, I like chicken best in paprika seasoning, stuffed with onions, garlic and rosemary and baked in the oven in its own juices until crispy. Served with tasty saffron rice and green dill beans. From the chicken's gravy you can conjure up a delicious sauce. To do this, pour the gravy together with the filling of the chicken into a saucepan, add a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice and bring to the boil for a few seconds. This gives the sauce a fresh and delicately fruity note. And I recommend a Pinot Blanc to go with it... Hm, wait a minute! Oh sorry, I almost forgot that we're talking about an airport here and not about cooking recipes. 😉
